OAK RIDGE — The Jefferson Township Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the 2018-2019 winter season of its successful Challenger Basketball and Gym Activities program for special needs children.

Boys and girls age 5–18 (or the completion of high school) and young adults 19 to 35 with physical or mental challenges are invited to join this program. Tom DeVries, a resident of Jefferson Township, will manage the league.

The activities will begin in the White Rock Elementary School’s Lower Gym, 2 Francine Place, Milton/Oak Ridge on Saturday, December 8 from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. and continue on Saturdays until Feb. 23, The program will not meet on Dec. 22 and 29.

Starting on Tuesday, January 8, the program will also run every Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 pm at Cozy Lake School, 205 Cozy Lake Road, Milton/Oak Ridge and continue until Feb. 19.

This program offers players the chance to participate in one of the most popular sports worldwide – basketball.

Participants will play with the same equipment and by the same rules as in any basketball game with the exception that they have the option to use the “buddy” system for assistance. Every player on the roster plays in the game, and no score is kept. Thanks to fundraising efforts by the Challenger League’s parent group led by Scott Luker, the normal registration fee for this program will be waived for the 7th consecutive season.

Registration for this program is only online through Community Pass so log on to https://register.communitypass.net/reg/index.cfm; and if you already have an existing account, sign in or follow the prompts to set up your own personal account through the Jefferson Township community. In either case, chose “2018-2019 Challenger Sports Programs” as the season to register. As there is no fee to participate, there will be no amount due.

If you experience difficulty in registering online, you can log on to www.jeffersontownhip.net, click on the “Form Center” link on the left side of the home page, and scroll down to the Recreation Department to find “Community Pass Online Registration Instructions” with step-by-step directions. If you still need assistance, please contact the Recreation office at 973-663-8404 x4 or cpunturieri@jeffersontownship.net for assistance.

Always look for information about upcoming programs and activities in the Virtual Backpack section of the Jefferson Township school district’s website at www.jefftwp.org, the township website at www.jeffersontownship.net by going to the link entitled “Forms Center” and then scrolling to the “Recreation Department”, on the Jefferson Township Facebook page, and on our local online news vehicles www.thejeffersonchronicle.com and www.mylakenews.com.
