Nelson Alvarez, owner of “FIT CLUB”, proposed his boxing program to the Ogdensburg Board of Education on Dec. 4.

“I would like to thank all the parents that are supporting my cause," Alvarez said. "Together as a strong community, we can try to prevent our youth from making harmful choices.”

Alvarez explained to the Board of Education that “some of what our future leaders are facing are suicide by bullying, stress, and obesity in addition to anxiety.”

Alvarez is hoping that a clear channel could be implemented with parents, teachers and coaches.

“I believe that the program will help them improve their grades and learn everyday responsibility at home and outside their homes.”

Alvarez approached Principal/Superintendent David Astor with his idea for “Fit Club.” Astor responded to Alvarez regarding his presentation and Astor made some suggestions to Alvarez regarding the “Fit Club “ program.

Alvarez would like to see the “Fit Club” implemented in May. The “Fit Club” program consists of basic boxing, footwork, jump rope, shadow boxing and other disciplines.

“There is no physical contact in Fit Club,” Alvarez said. "In addition the students from 9 to 14 can attend the program after school and can attend twice a week for a month.” Astor and Alvarez are going to work together to come up with a feasible plan for the implementation of “Fit Club”. Alvarez suggested May would be a good month for the “Fit Club” to begin.
